- Drainage already works. An overlay follows the slab’s pitch; if water pools now, fix that first.
- You want the look and feel of pavers without tear-out cost — typically saving that $2–4 per square foot of demolition plus disposal.
When it isn’t
A failing slab takes its overlay with it. Active settlement, big elevation breaks, or tree roots actively lifting the concrete mean the slab comes out and the job becomes a standard full-depth install. Any contractor who quotes an overlay without inspecting the slab’s condition and the height transitions is guessing with your money.
