The best thing about pavers is that they’re repairable — but only if the repair is done right. Sunken sections, shifted borders, storm washouts, tree-root heaves, stains, and weed-choked joints: all fixable, usually for a fraction of replacement cost, and usually invisibly. Here’s what Northeast Florida paver repair actually involves.
The problems we see most
- Settling and low spots. The classic: a dip near the garage or a wavy driveway line. Cause is almost always base compaction, water infiltration, or utility trench settling. Fix: lift the affected area, rebuild and compact the base, relay the same pavers.
- Sunken pavers along the driveway edge. Failed or missing edge restraint lets the field spread. Fix: reset the border on proper restraint.
- Tree-root heave. Common under Riverside and St. Augustine’s mature oaks. Pavers come up, the root is addressed, pavers go back — the repair a concrete slab simply cannot have.
- Storm and drainage damage. Washed-out joint sand and undermined corners after heavy rain events. Fix: address the water path first, then re-sand and re-seal.
- Stains, mold, and tired finish. Often not damage at all — a professional clean, re-sand, and seal makes a 10-year-old deck look new.
Repair or replace?
Rule of thumb: if the pavers themselves are sound and you like the look, repair — even large lift-and-relay sections run well below new-install pricing, and matched used pavers blend invisibly. Replacement earns its keep when the paver line is discontinued and damaged units can’t be matched, when the base has failed across the whole area, or when you wanted a different surface anyway. An honest contractor will tell you which side of the line you’re on; that honesty is one of our vetting criteria.

Small lift-and-relay repairs are typically priced by the job with a minimum call-out; larger section rebuilds price per square foot at rates comparable to installation labor without the material cost (you already own the pavers).
