Paver marketing is national; your driveway is in Florida. The materials that thrive here are the ones that handle four local realities: brutal UV, airborne salt, daily summer soakings, and ground that shifts. Here’s what actually holds up in Northeast Florida β and what to skip.
The short list
- Dense concrete pavers (the workhorse). Modern concrete pavers from the major Florida manufacturers are pressed far denser than poured concrete, which is what salt air and moisture care about. Choose through-color (pigment all the way through) so wear doesn’t expose gray.
- Travertine (the premium pick). Naturally cool underfoot, naturally slip-resistant, and completely at home in coastal design β the pool deck favorite. Full breakdown in our travertine guide.
- Shellstone and coral-look stone. Regional character, light color, cool surface. Softer than travertine β best on patios and decks, not driveways.
- Clay brick (the traditionalist). Colorfast forever (the color is fired in, not pigmented), extremely durable, and looks right on older homes β St. Augustine’s historic district loves it. Costs more per unit than concrete.
What matters more than material
Color and surface temperature: light colors (sand, ivory, silver) run measurably cooler in sun and hide efflorescence; dark charcoal driveways look sharp in October and cook feet in July. Finish: tumbled and textured surfaces grip better wet. Thickness: 60mm minimum for anything a car touches; 1ΒΌ-inch travertine for decks, 2-inch for coping. And more than any of it: the base and the installer. A premium paver on a lazy base fails faster than a budget paver installed right β which is why vetting the contractor is the real material decision.
What to skip in Florida
- Bargain-bin thin pavers on driveways. 40β50mm product belongs on walkways or overlays, never under vehicles.
- Untreated soft natural stones. Some imported sandstones drink Florida moisture and grow things you don’t want.
- Dark, smooth, untextured surfaces around pools β hot and slick is the exact wrong combination.
