Every Northeast Florida hardscape decision is secretly a water decision. We get 50-plus inches of rain a year, most of it in violent afternoon doses, and a named storm every few seasons stress-tests whatever you built. Pavers are one of the best surfaces you can put water on — if the installation respects where that water goes.
Why pavers handle Florida water well
- Joints breathe. Even standard paver joints pass some water into the base instead of sheeting 100% of it toward your garage, easing the load on gutters and swales.
- Permeable systems go further. True permeable pavers on an open-graded base swallow rainfall outright — increasingly relevant as counties tighten impervious-area rules, and occasionally the difference between a permit and a redesign on a big driveway project.
- Storms don’t total them. A washout that undermines a slab corner cracks it forever; the same washout under pavers is a lift-and-relay repair.
The drainage details a good installer sweats
- Pitch. Surfaces slope away from the house, the garage slab, and the pool — subtly, consistently, verified with a level and not an eyeball.
- Where the water lands. Sending your driveway’s runoff into your neighbor’s yard is both bad manners and a code issue; swales, channel drains, and downspout planning route it legally.
- Edges and low spots. Channel drains at garage thresholds, French drains at chronic puddles, and edge restraint that survives saturation.
- After-storm behavior. Joint sand replenishment and a look at any new low spots after a big blow — cheap maintenance that prevents expensive settling (see the maintenance guide).
Ask your contractor these two questions
